Why computer art
For over 50 years the School of Visual Arts has earned a unique and distinguished reputation as a premiere college for the visual arts. Unlike any other college, the School of Visual Arts exclusively hires working professionals as instructors. Our faculty members are working professionals who enjoy teaching, not full-time or tenured professors.
The Computer Art department offers extensive instruction in 3D Computer Animation, Motion Graphics, Compositing and Visual Effects. Electives are offered each year in computer programming and scripting, game design, interactive media and installation art. Computer Art majors are also required to take non-computer art studio electives from the many outstanding programs at SVA.
Every Computer Art major receives extensive training in both 2D and 3D computer graphics. While technology is a critical part of the Computer Art instruction, this is a production-based curriculum and students are expected to produce portfolio quality work every semester. During the Junior and Senior years, students focus on a specialization that allows them to master both the technique and the craft required to produce a final Thesis Project in either computer animation or visual effects. We give our students the opportunity to learn the most current software applications from working professionals, and the resources to develop both the personal and professional communication skills that are necessary to succeed as a visual artist.
To earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Computer Art at SVA, students must complete 120 credits as follows: 72 credits in studio, 30 credits in humanities & sciences, 15 credits in art history, and 3 credits in open electives.
When you enter the Computer Art Department, you will hit the ground running. We begin by building your foundation skills in drawing, digital imaging and digital video, giving you techniques that will enable you to work in any platform and in any production environment. We'll also challenge you to develop your verbal and writing skills, since all the technical skills you gain will mean little without your ability to tell a story.

This is a year we ask you to meet a set of challenges that will affect your future career path. All Computer Art majors attend a full year of both 3D computer modeling and animation and 2D motion graphics, compositing and visual effects. In both disciplines, you will receive a strong technical foundation for your Junior and Senior years. This is also the time to take full advantage of the diverse resources SVA offers. All Sophomores are required to take a 3-credit studio elective not offered by the Computer Art department.

By your third year with us you begin to understand the subtleties of your discipline and to learn the specialized techniques and professional practices in use today. From this moment you will take more and more responsibility for your education. We will give you the tools and insights, but you are expected to gain work experience through internships, part-time employment and participation in department projects or lab assistantships. This is also the time to take full advantage of the diverse electives we offer, as you consider what specialty skills you would like to hone. All Juniors are required to take a 3-credit studio elective not offered by the Computer Art department.

As you prepare to begin a professional career, you will create a thesis that represents your skills and capabilities. Senior year is the time to fine-tune your strengths and explore the latest creative and technical nuances of your discipline. Equally important is your ability to present yourself professionally, express your ideas and develop effective communication skills.
